While most eyes will be on what the Minnesota Vikings do at the quarterback position, the team has other unfilled holes that need to be addressed in free agency.
Kicker is one of them. It was nearly a year ago that Ryan Longwell(notes) was one of the players dispatched to Mississippi to help bring back Brett Favre(notes). Now, the 36-year-old is out of contract and waiting for the lockout to end like everyone else.
"We have learned patience being free agents,” Longwell told Fox Sports North. “We don't know where we are going to play; we don't know where we are going to be. So there has been an element of learning for Sarah and I of being patient.”
While the Vikings have experimented with a kickoff specialist while Longwell has been on the roser, he’s been solid for them scoring. He’s made 43 of 46 field goals over the last two seasons.
"Our full intention to go back to Minnesota and put together another good stretch of years up there," Longwell said. "It does seem like a really good fit. I am a firm believer in the way Coach (Leslie) Frazier approaches coaching and life and approaches people.
“You have to be ready for something else, just in case. Whether I play one more game or five or 10 more years, who knows? But you want to leave a legacy of leadership, and in the spiritual realm that is obviously very important to us.”
